Rockland Ice Festival Called Off for 2013
Organizers say sluggish economy will put the Knickerbocker fete on hiatus.
Citing "challenging economic conditions," event organizers for the Knickerbocker Ice Festival said Thursday the 2013 event has been called off.
Organizers are hoping the fete—which transforms a portion of Rockland Lake State Park into an ice-carving capitol—will pick up again in 2014, but nothing official has been announced.
The event began in 2007 as a celebration of Rockland Lake's history; the region was the ice industry's center in the 19th century. The fete ran in January in years past, and featured children's entertainment, nature tours, history lessons and food and drink from local merchants.

"We are disappointed that the Knickerbocker Ice Festival won’t be held at Rockland Lake in 2013. Each year it became more and more popular and had become a top attraction for Rockland County every winter," said Maria Rodd, Knickerbocker Ice Festival CEO. "We hope to someday bring it back to Rockland Lake, possibly in 2014."
