Orangetown Police Officer Assaulted in Nyack

Spring Valley man arrested after chase, was subdued with Taser.

A Spring Valley man has been charged with assaulting an Orangetown police officer in Nyack early Sunday morning as town officers were inspecting bars on Main Street, according to Orangetown Police.

In the incident, police said Fidel Ceus, 30, of 31 Fairview Ave., Spring Valley, ran away from police, led them on a brief chase and fought with officers trying to arrest him. Police said they used a Taser to subdue Ceus.

As Ceus was handcuffed, police said, he continued to struggle with police and a town officer suffered a hand injury in the process.

Police said town officers came across Ceus as they were conducting inspections at Main Street businesses licensed to sell alcohol. At 1:33 a.m. Sunday, police said officers encounted an unruly, disorderly man at the Pour House, 102 Main St. That man was later identified as Ceus.

As officers tried to question Ceus, police said, Ceus is accused of hitting an Orangetown officer twice in the chest and then running away. Police chased Ceus about two blocks to the corner of High Avenue and North Broadway, where police said Ceus was spotted hiding behind an air conditioning unit.

Ceus is accused of starting to fight with town officers who tried to arrest him. Police said that led to officers to shoot Ceus with a Taser to subdue him.

Ceus was taken to Orangetown Police Headquarters, where he was charged with assault on a police officer, a felony, resisting arrest, a misdemeanor, disorderly conduct and harassment, both vioations. He was later released on $200 bail pending a March 5 hearing in Nyack Village Court.
