Nyack police sergeant Edward O'Grady and officer Waverly Brown lost their lives in the Brinks robbery over 30 years ago, but their memories are honored anually with a stirring ceremony—and through the O'Grady-Brown Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Each year, Rockland youngsters headed to college and interested in a law enforcement career have a chance to lock down financial assistance in the heroes' names.

O'Grady and Brown engaged the Brinks robbers—members of the Black Liberation Army—near the Nyack Thruway entrance in 1981 after a $1.6 million heist in Nanuet.

Peter Paige, a Brinks security guard, also lost his life in the incident.

The scholarships—which last year were $1,000 each—are presented with the assistance of the Police Chiefs Foundation of Rockland County and the Rockland County Patrolman's Benevolent Association.

Last year, two Nyackers were among the winners—Christopher Archibal and Nicholas Kydon.

To apply, students must be graduating high school seniors and/or matriculated undergraduate students pursuing degrees directly related to advancing a career in law enforcement.

The deadline is April 15; winners will be announced in May.
