Skateboarders, Sponsored Event Will Head to Nyack

Village will host hours-long skate session come Sept.

While Nyack skateboarders still haven't seen their realized, the next best thing is on its way.

"Game of Skate," an event that houses skateboarding competitions and raffles, is slated to commandeer the Riverspace parking lot Saturday, Sept. 29 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

"A lot of skaters are concentrated in the Nyack area," explained Sarah Anderson, a village resident who helped orchestrate the event. Anderson's husband is an avid skater, and one of her two children is just picking up the sport, too.

The one-day event is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of the Nyacks, Second Nature skate shop in Peekskill and Vans shoes and clothing. Vans will be providing merchandise for contests and giveaways.

On the agenda is the eponymous "game of skate."

"It's like 'horse' in basketball," Anderson said. "Two skaters or teams compete; one does a trick, and the other has to pull it off."

Anderson said this is the first event of its kind in Nyack, and serves a specific purpose.

"It's to demonstrate to Nyack that skateboarding is a popular, safe sport," Anderson said.

Anderson has been in the vanguard of residents working toward a local skate facility; she says her husband has to travel to New York City, Yonkers or New Jersey locations to skate.

"There's no where to go in Rockland," she added.

Anderson is hoping for a strong turnout.

"I'm working to get as many people as I can," she said. "I'd love to see 100."
