Falafel Sells Out in Nyack

Thursday farmers' market gains the Taiim Falafel Shack

Earlier this month was the second appearance at the by a fresh new vendor, the Taiim Falafel Shack. Because the week before was mostly a rainy day, their second visit was much more popular.

"By 11 a.m. we were already sold out of falafels and basil hummus," said Elle McQuistion, who was running the booth.

Nyackers bought up the Mediteranean chickpea balls with incredible speed, but that didn't keep away customers. Displayed on the table were various types of hummus and a babaghanouj ready for sampling with strips of white and whole wheat pita.

Many people stopped for a taste and most purchased afterwards. A young man asked if the babaghanouj would be as good as his mom's, and Elle encouraged him to try. After he did, he smiled and nodded.

Any purchase of hummus or babaghanouj comes with pita. There was also a cucumber salad for sale—it was a light meal with a taste that brings memories of the Greek Tzatziki sauce. Another similarity to Greek dining was the Baklava for sale; it wasn't as buttery as the Greek version and also contained pistacios, but was delicious nonetheless.

The Taiim Falafel Shack is located in Hastings-on-Hudson, where married owners Kerri Jew and Zamir Iosepovici opened about a year ago. It is a small restaurant with only a few tables, but uses the parking lot next door for outside dining.

"I like the feel of it here," McQuistion said. "People are friendly. It's a nice [village]."
