Car Heavily Damaged by Fire on Thruway in South Nyack

No one injured; traffic jammed by fire.

A Long Island man's car caught fire and was heavily damaged on the New York State Thruway in South Nyack this morning.

Nyack Fire Department Deputy Chief Vincent Reid said the man, who was alone in the car going southbound on the Thruway got out of the 2002 Altima safely and was not injured. The fire started in the engine compartment of the Altima and spread to the interior of the car.

Three companies of the Nyack Fire Department along with New York State Police went to the scene of the 10:02 fire, which blocked traffic on the Thruway. Reid said the Altima was engulfed by flames when he and other volunteer firefighters arrived. He said state troopers used their portable fire extinguishers in an attempt to battle the fire as well.
