Albertus Magnus will honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King and Richard McNichol today and Monday with its Martin Luther King Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament.
Xavier, a Jesuit High School located in New York City, will play Hackley School from Tarrytown 12:30 p.m. today in the tournament opener. Albertus Magnus (8-1) will try to continue its strong start to the season 2 p.m. today against Clarkstown South.
That game will feature a sibling rivalry. The younger brother of Albertus Magnus senior point guard Pat McGuinness, Conor McGuinness, is contributing as a freshman for Clarkstown South. Their father, Albertus Magnus Athletic Director Joe McGuinness, is a graduate of Clarkstown South. A large group of McGuinness family members is expected for Sunday's game.
Richard McNichol, Sr. was a parent-volunteer for many years as his son, Richard McNichol Jr., Class of ’71, attended AMHS.
"McNichol, Sr. was a great enthusiast of the Falcons’ sports teams (especially Basketball) and over the decades gave of his time, talent and treasure to support our student-athletes, kind of person who always had a very positive outlook on life and tried to help others without concern for his own credit or satisfaction," said Marty Moran, director of development and alumni relations at Albertus. "Just a Great Guy."
The consolation game is set for 2 p.m. Monday, with the championship to follow at 4 p.m.
